General Skilled Migration
For people who are students in Australia
If you are the holder of a prescribed student visa in Australia, you or your partner must be under the age of 45 years of age when applying.
If you or your partner are not under the age of 45, you must already be the holder of a graduate visa otherwise you will not be eligible and this is not the pathway for you.
The person who is under the age of 45 must also have:
- A minimum of Competent English; and
- Have completed an Australian degree, diploma or trade qualification as a result of at least two academic year of study in Australia. This qualification must be successfully assessed as satisfactory by the relevant Australian skills assessing body.
Competent English
If you hold a valid passport from, and are a citizen of one of the following countries: United Kingdom (UK), Canada, New Zealand, United States of America (USA), Republic of Ireland you will be regarded as having competent English. If you are not from one of these countries, you must score 6 or above in each component of a general IELTS test (www.ielts.org).

In addition to the above Basic Requirements, other factors that may contribute to the success of your application include:
- If you have a relative (parent, brother, sister, niece, nephew, aunt, uncle, first cousin or grandparent) who is an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident, living in Australia and is willing to sponsor you.
- If you can score 7 or above in each component of a general IELTS test. (www.ielts.org).This is available to people from all countries.
- If you have 3 or more years of recent work experience in your nominated occupation.
- If you have had 1 year work experience in Australia in the past 4 years which is closely related to your nominated occupation or you have had 1 Professional Year in Australia closely related to nominated occupation.
- If you studied and obtain your Australian qualification in a regional or low population growth Metropolitan area of Australia.
- If your spouse also meets the basic requirements.
- If you have been nominated by an Australian State or Territory.
- If you have a relative living in a designated area of Australia.
- If you have a *professional level of language skills in another language other than English. (*Professional meaning that you are the holder of a degree that was conducted in a designated language or you are a level 3 professional translator or interpreter)
You will have the chance to let us know whether you can address any (or all of the above) requirements when completing a Free Migration Assessment. The information you supply in the Free Migration Assessment will be assessed and evaluated by a registered migration agent. You can then expect a personalised and professional reply which will advise you of your prospects of success in accordance with the General Skilled Migration Points Test.
