Passport Fees

Passport Fees (Effective from 1 January 2026)

Fees vary depending on the type of passport or document you apply for, where you lodge your application, and whether additional services are requested.

All amounts listed are shown in Australian dollars (AUD).

Paying Your Passport Fee in Australia

If you lodge your passport application within Australia, the relevant fee must be paid at the time your application is submitted. Payment methods depend on where the application is lodged.

Applications lodged through Australia Post generally allow payment by EFTPOS, major credit cards, or cash. Applications lodged at an Australian Passport Office accept card payments only and do not accept cash.

Passport application fees are set by the Australian Government and are not refundable once an application has been processed.

Paying Your Passport Fee Overseas

Applicants lodging their passport application outside Australia will usually be required to pay the equivalent fee in the local currency of the country where the application is submitted.

Payment methods and local procedures can vary between embassies, high commissions, and consulates. Most overseas locations accept card payments, but applicants should confirm accepted payment methods directly with the office where they plan to lodge their application.

In addition to the standard passport fee, an overseas surcharge may apply.

Australian Passport Fees: Historical Price Changes (2023–2026)

Australian passport fees have increased steadily over recent years. The table below shows how the cost of a standard adult 10-year passport has changed between 2023 and 2026.

Why Australian Passport Fees Increase

Australian passport fees are reviewed regularly and are adjusted to reflect changes in administrative, security, and production costs. Modern passports incorporate advanced security features, biometric technology, and specialised manufacturing processes, all of which contribute to higher production and processing costs.

Fee adjustments are typically linked to broader economic factors rather than changes to passport eligibility or validity periods.

Do Passport Fees Change Every Year?

Passport fees are generally reviewed annually, with changes commonly taking effect from January each year. When a fee increase occurs, it applies based on the date the application is lodged, not the date the passport is issued.

Applicants planning to apply close to the end of the year should be aware that lodging after a fee change takes effect means the new fee will apply.

Passport Fees and Citizenship Planning

For permanent residents planning to become Australian citizens, passport fees are an important part of overall financial planning. While an Australian passport can only be applied for after citizenship is granted, its cost is a necessary final step in obtaining full travel rights as an Australian citizen.

Understanding passport fees in advance allows applicants to better plan the timing and total cost of their citizenship and post-citizenship applications.
