Major Changes to the Training Visa (Subclass 407) From 12 November 2026

Applicants for Australia’s Training visa (subclass 407) will soon face new restrictions, with applications required to be lodged from outside Australia from 12 November 2026.
The Australian Government has announced significant changes to the Training visa (subclass 407), affecting applicants who are currently in Australia and those planning to undertake occupational training.
Under the new rules, applicants must be outside Australia when they lodge their application and when their visa is granted.
This means individuals currently in Australia who wish to apply for a subclass 407 visa must leave the country before submitting their application.
What Is Changing?
From 12 November 2026:
- Offshore applications only: Applicants must be outside Australia when lodging their Training visa application.
- Offshore visa grants: Applicants must also be outside Australia when their visa is granted.
- Invalid onshore applications: Applications submitted from within Australia will be considered invalid, even if the ImmiAccount system allows submission.
- No associated Bridging visa: Applicants who lodge offshore will not receive a Bridging visa linked to their Training visa application.
Submitting an invalid application can have serious consequences, particularly for individuals whose current visa has expired. Decisions that an application is invalid are not subject to merits review.
What About Applications Already Lodged?
The changes will not affect valid Training visa applications submitted before 12 November 2026.
These applications will continue to be assessed under the rules in place at the time of lodgement.
However, applicants must still satisfy the requirements introduced on 11 March 2026, which require both an approved temporary activities sponsor and an approved training nomination before lodging a visa application, unless the sponsor is a Commonwealth agency.
What Should Applicants Currently in Australia Do?
Anyone considering a Training visa application should carefully review their circumstances before making travel or visa arrangements.
Applicants should ensure their sponsorship and nomination have been approved, prepare the necessary supporting documents, and check the expiry date of their current visa before departing Australia.
Importantly, applicants must remain outside Australia when their Training visa is granted.
While applicants may enter Australia on another valid visa during processing, they must comply with that visa’s conditions and leave Australia again before their Training visa can be granted.
Processing times can vary, and approval is never guaranteed.
Planning Ahead Is Essential
These changes represent a significant shift for individuals considering the subclass 407 Training visa, particularly those already living in Australia.
The requirement to apply offshore introduces additional considerations around travel, accommodation, employment and maintaining lawful visa status.
For employers and training sponsors, early preparation is equally important. Sponsorship and nomination approvals must be in place before an applicant can proceed with their visa application.
